SMALL CRAFT: COLD WATER (27 min) Dramatic action: Two canoeists who upset far from shore, two fishermen who overturn their boat, a board sailor who goes out too far in big water, all suddenly face death. In-the-water demonstrations by Coast Guard personnel show the features advantages of various PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) for different activities conditions. A likely victim sequence covers the major mistakes that lead to fatal boating accidents COLD WATER CAN KILL (18 min) Dramatic action: A cold water canoeing accident results in death; a family boat overturns, but the family is saved because they are prepared for a cold-water accident Teaches viewers how to prevent and treat immersion hypothermia, the life-threatening cooling of the body core that occurs when a person is immersed in cold water. EMERGENCY SURVIVAL IN WINTER (19 min) Dramatic action: A stranded pick-up truck driver, two women skiers sustain an injury, and two young, out-of-gas snowmobilers get stuck outdoors far from quickly available help. Gives basic survival skills for persons who may skid off the road, be lost or stranded outdoors, in a rural or remote area in winter. HYPOTHERMIA: OUTDOOR KILLER (24 min) (The on land counterpart to Cold Water Can Kill Small Craft: Cold Water ) Dramatic action: A wet woman hiker, a soaked and lost hunter, cross-country skiers, all face death by hypothermia. Teaches viewers how to prevent treat hypothermia, the dangerous body cooling caused by outdoor activity in cold, wet and windy conditions. EMERGENCY RESPONSE OUTDOORS (23 min) Dramatic action: A hiking party is faced with a severely injured member to care for and evacuate and a near-drowning victim must be evacuated after a canoe accident. Deals with basic first aid and emergency evacuation decisions procedures to be followed after an outdoor recreational accident when medical help is not immediately available. Western Canada averages around 15 fatalities per year as a result of avalanches. Most are back-country skiers, mountaineers, and snowboarder, enjoying their recreational pursuits. In this new DVD, avalanche specialists explain and demonstrate the essential precautions and skills that can save the lives of people traveling in avalanche county in winter. You must wear a transceiver that sends out a signal if you are caught and buried in an avalanche. You must also carry a probe and an avalanche shovel to rescue anyone who is caught, and you must practice using these tools. You must also know how to read the daily avalanche bulletins, and how to recognize dangerous slopes. Choose your companions carefully, and never travel alone.
