Newborn hearing screening is extremely important as it helps to determine whether infants have hearing loss. Guam EHDI works to assure that all babies born on Guam get screened for hearing loss by 1 month. If a baby does not pass their hearing screen, a Diagnostic Audiological Evaluation (DAE) will be conducted by 3 months of age. A baby with hearing loss will be enrolled in early intervention services by 6 months of age.

Universal newborn hearing screening is mandated by Guam Public Law 27-150.

Available in 4 languages: Chamorro, Chuukese, Korean, and Tagalog.

The Guam Early Hearing Detection & Intervention (EHDI) Fitme Project supports the development of a statewide program and system of care that ensures that deaf or hard of hearing children are identified through newborn and infant hearing screening and receive evaluation, diagnosis, and appropriate intervention that optimize their language, literacy, and social-emotional development.

Early Intervention

Early intervention services are family-centered services and supports that help families meet the overall developmental needs of an infant or toddler (birth to three years old). The Guam Department of Education Guam Early Intervention System (GEIS) provides diagnostic, family support, and intervention services to infants, toddlers, and their families.
