Chetco River Record Salmon 65-POUND KING SALMON CAUGHT IN 2011 WITH GUIDE ANDY MARTIN BY WAYNE SMITH IS THE BIGGEST IN RECENT MEMORY FROM THE CHETCO. When Wayne Smith felt a massive tug on the end of his line during a trip down the Chetco River in November 2011, he knew instantly he had hooked the biggest salmon of his life. But he had not idea the trophy king that just smacked his plug would be perhaps the biggest ever caught on the Chetco. Fishing with guide Andy Martin of Wild Rivers Fishing, Wayne landed a 65-pound king rivaling the size of those caught on Alaska’s famous Kenai River. The giant salmon, caught on a HawgNose FlatFish, is the new unofficial Chetco River record, and by far the largest king caught in decades on the Chetco. But Wayne isn’t alone in catching enormous salmon on the Chetco. Clients of Andy have landed several trophy kings over 50 pounds in recent years, giving Andy a well-earned reputation as one of the top guides at getting customers into lunker-size fish. Fall salmon fishing is in full swing on the Rogue, Coquille and Coos, and about to heat up on the upper Klamath. The first several fish have now been caught at the mouth of the Chetco. Paul and Karen Pagel Sunnyvale, California Solid salmon runs expected on Chetco, SmithWith a strong run of king salmon last year on the Rogue River, and big numbers of jack salmon in the Chetco and Smith rivers, the run forecast for 2018 is promising. The Rogue Bay was the salmon hot spot for all of Oregon, and should fish well again this year. With a lot of 3-year-old salmon in the Rogue last year, we are expecting a healthy run of 4-year-old salmon in the Chetco, Smith and Rogue, since those fish tend to spend the ocean portion of their life in the same area, and their runs are usually similar.The Rogue salmon season begins in mid-July. The Chetco will see salmon at the mouth of the river, with the best drift boat fishing in October and November. The Smith fishes best from late October through November.
