by Larry VarneyCo-EditorIt s not often I get a chance to review articles of clothing, but when someone sent me an email, talking about how good a pair of shorts were, to the point that both he and his wife have bought more than two pairs for each, I decided to take a look. I m talking about the Uprising from a company called elevenpine. Read More Share by Larry VarneyCo-EditorI ve ridden many Greenspeed trikes over the years, and owned several, too. I was always impressed by the ride quality, as well as the build. Everything seemed to feel and look “just right”. And, it didn t hurt that Ian Sims shared the same opinions I had concerning smaller wheels and drum brakes – and I still love them! For those who haven t heard my praise, it comes down to having to worry about only one size of tire and tube to bring along on rides, and the very infrequent maintenance needed on drum brakes. When I saw that this trike, the GT20-RS not only had those features, but two other things I really like – rear suspension and folding – I knew I had to get one to review. Just in case you haven t heard my comments about this trike on various social media, I ll save my overall reaction for a bit longer. Read More Share by Larry VarneyCo-EditorWhen I refer to this trike as such, the word “ultimate” seems to annoy some people. They ask questions, such as “Where do you get off, calling this the ‘Ultimate Sprint’?” They ask upon what do I base that description, isn’t it just a matter of opinion, and so on. When I finally get the chance to just say: this is the trike that ICE put in its “Ultimate Collection”, they just look momentarily lost for a comment, then eventually just nod. And now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s look at this trike, OK? Read More Share Is this trike perfect? Is this the trike you should get? Let s get one thing straight right now: nothing is perfect, no trike is the one that everyone should buy but let s see if the TerraTrike Rambler is a trike you should buy. I always suggest that those interested find their closest dealer that handles the trike or bike involved, and check it out for yourself. I picked this one up at a new (to me) bike shop in the southeastern corner of Cincinnati, Fifty West Cycling https://www.fiftywestcycling.com/ nice place! At first glance, most of us think: wow, this trike is big! And it s heavy! Trust me: it s not *that* big, nor heavy. Sure, it s not tiny nor very light, but first impressions can be deceiving. It s the three 24 wheels that give it that look. Once you actually stand next to it, then sit on it, and especially if you have other trikes nearby, you ll find that it s not really so very different in overall dimensions than most other trikes. Before I go further, let s put the numbers up that so many are wanting to see, then we ll talk about what this all may mean to you. Involvement in MTM group rides on local trails and Central Indiana event rides help in spreading the word about the pitch of adventure that a trike makes possible. Triking wakes up the child inside those of all ages in spite of any physical challenge. At that point, I’ll sell it, and probably replace it with a similar but newer model. It’s not that I don’t like those things that I sell – it’s just that I am always eager to see what just came over the horizon, whether or not it’s significantly better, and so on. So, what should you think about this bike, the Recycled Recumbent Mach 2? I’ve had it since 2014 – that’s 6 years! Yeah, you’re right – I really, really like it!Some of you may not be familiar with A.D. Carson’s Recycled Recumbents. Just as the name indicates, he “recycles” recumbents. He’ll buy old, neglected, almost any recumbent – then see that it gets a new life, via a tune-up, replacement of worn-out parts, and so on. You can find some great bikes and trikes on his site! And, you can also see his creations – the “Mach” series of long wheelbase recumbents. You ve gotten a bike (or a trike), and you realize that you need to be able to carry some essential items, such as your wallet, keys, a spare tube, and maybe even one of those little mini-tool things. You find a rear rack at your local bike shop, along with a rack bag to sit on top of it. You re all set, right? And you are, for a while. The more you ride, the more it seems you need/want to carry with you. You find yourself in need of a tire pump, and there are small versions that work well. You are enjoying yourself so much, that you want to take photographs. At some point you find that the phone, while doing double-duty just isn t quite the camera you want to use. And then there are the rain clothes for when you are caught out, and so on. Before you know it, you ve got quite a pile of “essential” stuff you want to carry with you – and that little rack bag just isn t sufficient, right? So, what do you do? Share In 2020 Catrike is celebrating its 20th Anniversary. Created in the pursuit of building the best possible recumbent trike, it started as a one-person operation and today is one of the largest cycle manufactures in the United States. Over the last 20 years, Catrike has continued to build and refine its product line and U.S. based manufacturing process. They now produce over 3000 trikes a year.Every Catrike starts as raw aluminum tubing before it is cut, bent, welded, painted and assembled in Catrike s Orlando, Florida, factory. It s current line of premium, USA made recumbent trikes includes eight different models, each with their own unique riding style and characteristics. The diverse range and IBD focused business model of competitive margins, and free shipping has allowed Catrike to build a network of over 200 dealers. It is extraordinary to reach this milestone in the company s history, said General Manager Mark Egeland. Twenty years of manufacturing in Orlando and continued growth is a testament to our design philosophy, manufacturing process and an incredible team. We are extremely proud of our products and the innovations we have brought to the market. We are excited about our continued growth in the IBD market and building on the brand s momentum. Catrike recently announced the launch of its E-Cat line of electric assist trikes. Based on Catrike s existing range, most Catrike models will be available in E-Cat variants. The E-Cat line will be available in all eight of Catrike s signature colors: Moon Rock Silver, Liquid Black, Eon Green, Firefly Yellow, Atomic Orange, Lava Red, Candy Purple and of course Electric Blue. For more information about Catrike, visit them online at catrike.com. Electric assist has by all accounts been responsible for the recent resurgent bent industry sales. E-assisted bikes and trikes are now everywhere and having an impact on streets and trails worldwide. In an effort to control this new type of bicycle legislators and regulators are grappling with ways to balance safety and use.On this webcast we try to shed some light on the laws and regulations you might encounter wherever you ride your bent. Steve Magas, Ohio s Bike Lawyer , is back with us along with Texas attorney Alex Dulaney and Bicycle Evolution owner Doug Davis to help guide us through this thorny maze.In addition Larry Varney has a report on riding a Catrike Eola at the recent Big Honkin Trike Rally he attended in Florida, Denny Voorhees has an important announcement concerning a new fully sanctioned recumbent racing event and Bryan brings us the latest news from the bent world. Share How many of us remember what we went through, when we were looking to purchase our first recumbent trike? In my case, it was simple: a friend loaned me a trike. I loved it, so that’s what I wanted. My first trike was a Greenspeed GTO. Did I consider other trikes? Did I at least look at any, compared prices, features, and so on? Did I even sit on any other trikes? No, I just found one of those for sale within a reasonable driving distance, and bought it. Is this the right way to buy that first trike? No! I advise that we all try to sit on (and ride, if possible) as many trikes as we can, see which feel most comfortable, look over the components, and yes, compare prices. That last criteria is often the only one that many think about, and that’s a mistake. Yes, it’s important, but “you get what you pay for” is very often true. And that brings us to what this review is all about – a trike for all of us, newbies and veterans, to consider: the Catrike Eola.My first ride on an Eola was at a Recumbent Cycle-Con. I try to follow my own advice, sit on and hopefully ride as many trikes as I can get under me, and when I saw this model at the RCC, I took it outside to the test track for a lap or two. I already knew it was relatively inexpensive, and knowing how Catrikes usually feel, I was expecting to come away with a nod and a “yeah, it’s OK” feeling. And, I was wrong: it was much better than merely “OK”!Fast-forward several months until I got a chance to get some more serious riding time on an Eola. This time, it was at the “Big Honkin’ Trike Rally” in Florida in mid-February, 2020. If you have never heard of this event, there’s a good reason for that: this was the first time for it. It’s a lot like the Tater TOT ride in Idaho, with no registration fee, no hard-and-fast schedule, etc. It’s pretty much a gathering of recumbent enthusiasts, attending for the social aspect as much as the actual riding. Anyway, I did that, and rode an Eola for the week. How did I feel about the trike after a half-dozen days of lots of riding? Read on! BALLManaging EditorFor the last few years, Schlitter has become well known for their carbon fiber Encore model. Since the supply for that bike dried up, we’ve all been wondering what would come next. We are joined by Jim and Maria Parker from Cruzbike, Mike Wilkerson from Bacchetta, Jonathan Garcia from RANS, John Schlitter from Schlitter Bikes and Honza Galla from AZUB. Adding to the discussion will be our own Bryan Ball and Peter Stull. Denny Voorhees also has an interview with Sandy Earl who rode and finished the No Country for Old Men race this year. Share by Larry VarneyCo-EditorMany of you may recall my review of the first LUMOS helmet, referred to now as the Kickstart helmet. Even if you do remember it, I suggest everyone go back and read it – many of the things I said then, also apply to this new version, named Matrix. The Matrix does cost more than the Kickstart, and everyone knows how cheap I am, but let s see why I prefer it.A closer look at this helmet. It’s very similar to the prior helmet, but one difference stands out above all others – that rear display. The early one was very good, especially considering what others were offering – nada! But this one is nothing short of amazing. You can cycle through various display options, any of which is bound to capture the attention of motorists. It’s big, colorful, and the light patterns move! If someone behind you doesn’t see this, they’re either blind or on their phone. Read More Share
