Register/Present a Poster at Cell Bio Virtual 2021Cell Bio Virtual 2021-An Online ASCB|EMBO Meeting maintains a program with cutting-edge cell biology as its core focus, along with interdisciplinary programming. Submit an abstract to present a poster by Sept. 1 for reduced rates, and register by Sept. 30 for discounted registration.  This is the first in a series of blog posts to be released this quarter by the ASCB LGBTQ+ committee under the theme of Building a Welcoming Community for LGBTQ+ Scientists. Over the next month, we will present perspectives from authors at various stages of their research career (i.e., from graduate student through postdoc to Many of us are committed to outreach and educating the public about science, but what is it like to do this as a full-time job? We spoke with Erika Reinfeld at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) about her position at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, and how it changed during the COVID-19 Submit a Paper MBoC is now accepting submissions at mbcpapers.org to the Eighth Annual Special Issue on Quantitative Cell Biology. This issue will build on the successes of previous issues published in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021, and will provide an opportunity for researchers whose work crosses disciplines to reach a wide audience. Jennifer Lippincott-Schwartz, Diane Lidke, and Alex Mogilner are again serving Every so often, the planets in the U.S. policy universe line up to allow big steps forward in U.S. science policy. These steps forward can involve the creation of new programs or the infusion of significant amounts of federal funding for research. As one watches the skies over Washington, DC, now, it appears the heavenly Blue paint squirts onto a paper plate. Next is red, black, yellow, and finally, white. The pallet is ready. “Jay” dips her paintbrush hairs into the blue, moves the brush up, and gently graces the pigment across a white stretched canvas, making the first mark. She glides the paintbrush around the canvas, pushing and pulling Events of the past couple of years have forced the scientific community to recognize that we do not reflect the makeup of the broader community. Women continue to be underrepresented in many fields of science and the percentage of scientists who are Black, Indigenous, and LatinX is vastly lower than the proportion of the population Member profile: Valerie Tutwiler June 16, 2021 Valerie Tutwiler, assistant professor of Biomedical Engineering at Rutgers University, runs the Biomechanics of Blood Lab. She is active in ASCB’s Public Policy Committee and Mentor Match, served on an ASCB professional development taskforce, and has co-chaired the career subcommittee for the Committee for Postdocs and Students Read More...
