Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction The chain reaction of evilhate begetting hate, wars producing more wars must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation…Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a mans sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true.

-Martin Luther King “Strength to Love” 1963

The First Amendment of the United States Constitution enables free speech for all citizens of the United States.  This is typically considered one of the most important rights that U.S. citizens have.  Everyone has seen the violent crackdowns on free speech in other countries where any public criticism of the government is punishable with violence and imprisonment.  Unfortunately, the downside to the U.S. allowing such open forms of expression is that groups that seek to spread terror and hate can do so as long as they spread hate without threatening or carrying out threats of violence against these targeted groups.  The line between a hate group and a terrorist organization is quite thin, and it isn’t rare to see these groups move back and forth across any line that demarcates a hate group with a socially unacceptable perspective, and a terrorist organization that commits crimes.  Groups like the Ku Klux Klan have been known to be fairly peaceful groups where like-minded people could socialize about their fears of others (primarily African-Americans).  But some members are not harmless, and have carried out this hate group’s ideology to a violent conclusion where they feel the need to eliminate and/or terrorize the people they see as threats to their way of life.

The prevalence of hate-speech and hate groups on the World Wide Web has been a problem for years.  The anonymity provided by the Internet allows people to hide behind a generic username while also participating in cyber-bullying.  Cyber-bullying, while painful on its own, enables bullying beyond the Web.  Hate can be incited in an online environment and turn into physical and emotional abuse, and sometimes terrorism in person.  The web can also be used as a gathering place for terrorist and/or hate groups to plot their crimes.

Being educated about various hate groups and the websites that they run can enable information seekers to be better prepared for what they will encounter online, and also let targeted groups know what they are “up against.”  If a gay teenager is seeking information and resources to help him through a tough time, it is painful, yet useful, to know that there are groups like Westboro Baptist Church out there.  This group has a visible physical presence, which is aided by their online presence.

As a way to educate users about; and to combat hate speech on the web, I have built this webpage to serve as cursory overview of the types of hate groups that have an online presence.  All of these sites are easy to find with a simple search engine query, and the hate-speech delivered on these sites range from subtle, to flagrant, and nearly hidden at times.

Many of the categories I have used for the hate sites were taken from the terms used by the Southern Poverty Law Center [www.splcenter.org].  This organization has catalogued hate groups for decades, and they provide useful background information about the ideologies of these groups on a broad and sometimes specific basis.

On this site you can see in the top right corner the categories of “The Good” and “The Bad.”  “The Bad” lists various types of hate groups and clicking on the links in this menu allows the user to see a description of a specific group within this broader ideology identifier, accompanied by a description of the web site itself.  I have included screen-shots of each of the websites discussed so that the user has visual of what the web site in question looks like, if they do not feel comfortable actually logging in to these dubious websites.

“The Good” lists some resources that offer nearly the opposite sort of information that the hate sites offer.  These sites treat historical issues with respect, treat the individuals/groups involved as actual people, and offer good reliable information.  While “The Good” information is undoubtedly biased in some way (it’s of course impossible to write without any form of bias appearing), it is not the type of bias that promotes hate, intolerance, and ignorance of people that are different.

I have tried to include “similar” information in both categories.  For instance I have listed the Nation of Islam in “The Bad” group.  They have a history of promoting hate against non-black citizens, while at the same time promoting black empowerment and providing investment and uplift for black communities all over the world.  In the “The Good” I have listed The Black Panther Party as a mostly like-minded group that does not promote hate of others, and welcomes non-black members to help in their fight.  My purpose is to give users an idea of a “Good” information resource that could counteract the information and/or ideology offered by a “Bad” one.

The judgments I’ve made of “good” or “bad” are obviously subjective, and are my own.  I have used The Southern Poverty Law Center hate group information as a template for “The Bad” resources, but wrote my own descriptions and profiles of what these groups and their websites promote.  Any other information taken from The Southern Poverty Law Center is cited.  The Southern Poverty Law Center lists groups without linking to their websites, and this guide could serve as a supplement to their more extensive guide to hate around the U.S.

Perhaps with better education, the good information can help drown out the often louder noise produced by those who choose hate.  But until then, information professionals and users must stay vigilant about the hate that is waiting online.
