What People Did To Help

O’Neill Family 2,000kms for Pancreatic Cancer Research

In the middle of the most challenging environment of Covid-19, the O’Neill family from County Kildare set themselves a challenge that would be daunting at the best of times; to walk/run 2,000 kms to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer Research in St. Vincent’s. The fundraising was in memory of their beloved husband and father, Noel. May He Rest in Peace.

15 family members from Kildare, Cork, Wexford & Sydney, collectively took part in the challenge while remaining within the Covid guidelines. Amazingly they didn’t just achieve their objective but surpassed it, completing a distance of nearly 2,700 kms; an outstanding feat. In the process the family raised €10,300 for this vital medical area. It is an enormous contribution to our capacity for addressing Pancreatic Cancer and we are hugely grateful to everyone involved.

Jillian McNulty’s  Fundraising for Cystic Fibrosis

It seems that no edition of this magazine would be complete without reports of the many and varied fundraising activities of Jillian McNulty.  Jillian, named as Longford “Person of the Year”, has been unstinting in her support for both Cystic Fibrosis and the Renal Unit in St Vincent’s.   We are delighted to feature two of her ventures here.

In 2020, she organised a Valentine’s Ball in Lough Rynn Castle, Mohill, Co. Leitrim. Despite her own significant health challenges she created a fantastic occasion which was also a superb fundraising success.

Jillian presented proceeds of €3,500 from the Ball – of which €2,500 will be used for the Cystic Fibrosis unit and €1,000 for the Renal unit here in St. Vincent’s.

In September 2021, she organised a most innovative fundraising event. She had persuaded the Mayo football team, in advance of their All Ireland Final on September 11th, to sign a Mayo jersey to be raffled to raise funds.

Jillian raised a total of €2,425 on her fundraising page from this raffle and divided the funds equally between C.F. Ireland and the C.F. Unit here in St. Vincent’s.  We are most thankful to Jillian for donating €1,212.50 to our C.F. Unit.

Over many, many years Jillian has demonstrated phenomenal creativity and organisational ability to arrange event after event in support of this vital medical area. On behalf of our patients we owe so much to this extraordinary young woman.  We number Jillian among our Heroes—Thank You.

Suzanne Holligan Memorial Walk for St. Vincent’s and Tallaght Hospitals:

Suzanne Holligan was a young Garda working in Greystones when she died from cancer, in August 2019, at just 35 years old.  In a most generous gesture, her grieving family and friends sought to have other cancer patients benefit. On Saturday, September 12th 2020 they organised a 10km walk in Glendalough National Park. 50 people turned out for the walk.

Cancer/ Oncology care here in St. Vincent’s benefitted to the extent of €10,000 from this wonderful fundraising.

We are deeply indebted to Suzanne’s parents, Tom and Nuala, her partner Dave and son Rian, and all their family and friends for this wonderful kindness at such a sad time for them.

Suzanne’s Garda colleagues were most supportive and we are grateful to them also.  Additionally we want to thank AMES, Athy for their sponsorship.
