Our History
Built in 1910 and renovated in 1974 as a single family home, The McHenry House for the Homeless has a long history. Originally, it was built with six bedrooms, each containing it's own washbasin and one bathroom. The house had two parlors, a dining room, a kitchen, a sun porch, front and back porch and a balcony.
In 1915, the home was purchased by Major Rice and his wife. Under the ownership of the couple, the home served as a rooming house for the railroad people of Tracy. In 1918 the Rice family moved the structure to a larger lot facing the street.
They then constructed "Douglas Arms" apartments with eight units on the other half of the lot. Along with these units, the Rice family also owned ten garages and a small house situated to the south of the apartments.
In 1974 the property was sold to Burton and Barbara Fizpatrick. The Fizpatricks lived in this Victorian house for 14 years, then they sold it to the non-profit and it became the McHenry House Tracy Family Shelter.

Register"My name was nothing. I was invisible, I did not matter. My kids did not matter. . . to anyone. We fled a severely abusive life. We were free, but struggling to survive. I had no friends, no family, no where to turn. We had been living in my car. Hard to do on your own, harder with children, one being a toddler. I was directed to McHenry house, and it took some convincing to go. My trust in anyone had vanished.
After speaking with Armenia a few times. . . I did, eventually, decide to give it a try. That was hard for me, to put my trust in a stranger where people close to me had let us down. We were out of viable options. We went, we were no longer nothing, we were room number 6. I waited for the other shoe to drop, so to speak. Waiting for the struggle to continue. . . to be alone and nothing again. Except that did not happen. We were safe, we had meals, we had a washer and dryer, we had beds and blankets, we had showers, we had a bathroom. . . a toilet. Basic human needs that are easily overlooked in a normal day to day life.
The staff took care of us, learned our names, checked in on us, helped us get what we needed to feel human. Slowly, I began to feel human again. . . seen. . . cared for and about. The shelter gave me breathing room to create, work on, and achieve goals. It took me out of survival mode and placed me in a position to create the future I wanted for myself and my children. Through the kindness of others, donations and the encouragement of the staff. . . my baby had a birthday with cupcakes and goodie bags and gifts. My children got school supplies, toys and so much more because the kindness of strangers. And, that was strange. . . for people I would never know to care about us being ok. . . to have normalcy.
I enrolled in school. I got a job that houses the area of field I am going to school for. There is something to be said about being able to sleep without worry, it affords one the ability to feel rested, but also to think clearly about the things needed to be done to get to the next step. McHenry house worked with me, giving us the stability needed to do all of these things. Armenia always said I was going home from here. I did, I found a home. We left McHenry house, we went home. I would not have been able to without the support I received there. My name is Sylvia, and McHenry house helped me get my name back, I will forever be thankful to them."
