Roadside Weed Pickup

The WLMD will continue the roadside weed pickup program this summer. LAKE WEEDS ONLY can be placed on the roadside for pickup. Please make sure the pile is close to the side of the road and not setting back up against a building or tree line. We will not be picking up “ice-off” debris. Do not put lake sediment, dirt, rocks, branches, garbage or other debris in the pile. The pile WILL NOT be picked up if anything other than lake weeds are on the pile. Piles must be out by noon on Mondays to be picked up between Monday and Wednesday evening.

Here are the dates for 2022: June 6th, 20th, 27th; July 11th, 18th, 25th; August 8th, 15th, 29th; September 12th, 19th, 26th; and October 10th, 24th.

Paving of the Public Launch Postponed

As many have heard, the DNR is planning to re-pave the Wind Lake public launch parking lot. The original plan was to re-pave it in 2021 but the project was delayed to 2022. The DNR has again postponed the project because recent bids have been considerably higher than projected. Asphalt is petroleum based and just like the price of gasoline, the quotes have come back considerably higher than when the project was first budgeted. If prices drop, the paving could happen in fall.

Report on Vessel Safety Check June 11th, 2022

Marlys Williams and Dan Jahn of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary (USCGA) performed the Vessel safety Checks (VSC) assisted by John Landry, Jim Marks, Jeremy Sauld and Bruce Rosenquist of the Wind Lake Management District, on Saturday June 11th at the DNR Launch Ramp. Twenty five owners were contacted. Eleven passed the VSC. Five had insufficient time for the VSC. Eleven said no and one failed. There was one owner with three vessels. We look forward to offering this service again next year on Saturday June 10th 2023.

Goose Roundup 2022 Cancelled

Recognizing the need to reduce the goose population in the area, the WLMD board voted unanimously to contract with the USDA (Department of Agriculture) for a goose roundup in June. The USDA is the government authority that oversees the removal of geese not related to hunting. Unfortunately, the USDA has a rule that if there is an Avian Influenza (bird flu) case within 6 miles, they cannot perform a roundup and they denied the WLMD request. The USDA has to follow special regulations when there is a possibility of Avian Flu, including wearing respirators and light duty Haz-Mat suits but they currently do not have the equipment to complete a roundup under Avian Flu regulations. There was a case of Bird Flu in Racine County about 3 miles from Wind Lake. The WLMD board will continue to look for other options until a roundup can be completed.

Weed Harvesting Will Be Underway Soon

The second year of Wind Lake harvesting operations is underway. The Board has retained the services of harvesting Program Manager John Landry, Senior Operator Mike Strzok, and has added two additional part time operators; Steve Kerns and Pat Fitzgerald. The harvester will be launched the first week of June and training will start right away. Harvesting operations could start by mid-June and will continue through to Labor Day weekend. The plan is to harvest four to five days a week, depending on weather conditions and weed growth. The District must follow the approved harvesting plan and DNR regulations. With lake levels currently high compared to last year, our team is looking forward to getting cutting and being able to access areas that were not accessible last year with the low water levels. Please be patient as our harvesting team works to improve the conditions on Wind Lake.

The weed harvester will be moored at the District lot next to the public launch. While we encourage District shareholders to drive past and take a look, we request that people stay off the harvester. There are many sharp/hazardous objects on the harvester that could cause a serious injury.

Wisconsin DNR requires the Aquatic Plant Management Plan to be updated every five years. The harvesting and chemical treatment permits are based on this Plan.
