Liverpool Gastroenterology
The Directorate of Gastroenterologyand Hepatology is based at the Royal Liverpool University Hospitaland is a University Teaching Department as well as a regional tertiary referral center for Gastroenterology and Liver Disease. .
It is a busy Department containing 54 in-patient bed-base within the hospital, and 18 outpatient clinics. The endoscopy unit performs over 14,500 GI endoscopic procedures on the Royal Liverpool Hospital site.
Currently, 15 consultants (including5 professors) who see a wide variety of Digestive Disease problems include the current National Clinical Director of Liver Disease, the past president of the Royal College of Physicians, the current president, the president in waiting, and past president ofthe British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) and the past president of JAG. All of the consultants have a specialist interest and expertise in the sub-specialties of Gastroenterology. There are interests in Liver Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Advanced Endoscopy, Neuroendocrine tumours and all GI Cancers. There are four University-employed academic consultants who have strong research interests (for further details please see 'patient services' and 'consultant profiles').
The Directorate has a widely acclaimed endoscopy Unit and is one of only three National Training Centres for Endoscopy (for furrther details please see patient services/endoscopy).
There are 10 specialists nurses (3 Nurse Consultants) integrated into our service delivery portfolio which relies heavily on working in teams (please see 'Consultant/Personnel' section).
The special interests of the Directorate are reflected in the organisation of the inpatient and outpatient services.
