Roster Moves Posted: August 31st, 2021 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 1 Comment TweetThe Eagles have until 4pm on Tuesday to be down to 53 players. Howie Roseman and his staff started making the moves on Monday, trying to piece together the roster and give some players extra time to find a job.The biggest moves were additions rather than subtractions.Roster Moves: OL Landon Dickerson has been activated from the Active/Non-Football Injury list and S Rodney McLeod has been activated from the Active/PUP list. pic.twitter.com/AeoHaQGzQI Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) August 30, 2021McLeod I expected, Dickerson I did not.The Eagles are thin at safety ( Thin? That s damn near invisible. who gets that movie quote?). They need McLeod, ASAP. He isn t likely to be ready for the opener, but they couldn t afford to wait six weeks with him on PUP.The Dickerson move caught me off guard. I thought the Eagles would bring him along slowly. Instead, they are trying to get him on the field as soon as they can. The OL is healthy now so he s not needed at the moment, but we learned last year that OL health can change in a hurry.Dickerson becomes your top backup G or C, talent-wise.Landon Dickerson’s first practice work begins as the nominal second-team center in individual drills. Bo Wulf (@Bo_Wulf) August 30, 2021Activating Dickerson could have a trickle down effect. Sua Opeta now becomes a long shot to make the roster. Even Nate Herbig isn t on solid ground. This could mean cuts or possibly trades. The Linc Eagles fielding trade calls about offensive line and linebackers https://t.co/zIbG5RT1MA Brandon Lee Gowton (@BrandonGowton) August 30, 2021The Eagles saw how important OL depth was last year so they could just listen to offers and decide to keep as many OL as possible. The important thing is that they have options.Mailata Seumalo Kelce Brooks JohnsonDillard Toth Dickerson Herbig DriscollClark Opeta Awosika PryorDillard is the big name to watch. Teams needing LT help will be calling the Eagles to see what the cost for him is. The Eagles can deal him if they want since Mailata has established himself as the starter and Brett Toth showed he could play LT this summer. Le Raven Clark is also in the mix.The Eagles could hold onto Dillard to see if a contender has to deal with an OT injury during the year. That s when Dillard might be his most valuable. We ll just have to wait and see how things play out.One OL did get clipped already.#Eagles are waiving OL Ross Pierschbacher, former fifth-round pick of the Washington Football Team, who signed in Philly late last season. Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) August 31, 2021I think he could be a good fit for the practice squad. What about LB? Do the Eagles really have enough depth to deal someone there?Eric Wilson and Alex Singleton are the starters. Davion Taylor is a key part of the future. The Eagles could shop T.J. Edwards and then keep Shaun Bradley as a backup. Or they could shop Bradley, who is the better athlete. And they still have JaCoby Stevens. It is possible teams could have interest in Genard Avery. He s not 100 percent healthy right now. And the Eagles may want him to be their SAM for 2021 so shopping him might not make sense.***Some cuts are being made today. The Eagles have released CB Michael Jacquet, per source.Could end up back on their practice squad if he clears waivers. Dave Zangaro (@DZangaroNBCS) August 30, 2021The #Eagles are releasing WR Andre Patton, per #NFL source. Matt Lombardo (@MattLombardoNFL) August 31, 2021I’m told the #Eagles have informed Australian DE Matt Leo that he will be cut and they intend to use the international pathway exemption with him on the practice squad. Leo had a strong showing during this past week vs. the #Jets in practice. Mike Kaye (@mike_e_kaye) August 31, 2021No surprises, as you would expect. The bigger, tougher moves will come on Tuesday. The Eagles want to see if they can drum up trade interest in any of their bottom of the roster players.*****Some of you questioned how I could go with only four CBs on my roster prediction. The Eagles have four legit corners right now Slay Nelson Maddox McPhearson. The players behind them aren t good and just as important right now aren t healthy. I agree that four corners isn t enough as a long term number. That was my guess for the initial roster. The team will look into trades and/or claiming someone who gets cut. They have to know CB depth is an issue._ Roster Prediction Posted: August 29th, 2021 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 10 Comments TweetThe Eagles roster has to be down to 53 players on Tuesday. A lot can happen between now and then but I ll go ahead and make my roster prediction based on what we know now.In a good year, there are 55 to 58 guys you want to keep. That s not the case right now. The Eagles will be calling teams about potential trades and they ll be watching the waiver wire closely. Depth at WR, DT and DB is a question mark. This is a complicated roster to figure out for a few reasons. You have Rodney McLeod and Landon Dickerson coming off ACL injuries. Do they go on PUP or get activated? Will Zach Ertz get traded? Will Andre Dillard get traded?Tyree Jackson should make the initial roster and then be put on IR the next day so that he can rehab, but still potentially play this year. The team suddenly has depth at LB. Is that a spot where you can go deep? What do you do with Travis Fulgham and Nate Herbig? They showed starter ability last year, but were disappointing this summer. In the end, you focus on keeping the best players and having what you need on gameday. With that in mind:QB (3)Hurts, Flacco, MinshewRB (4) Sanders, Scott, Howard, GainwellWR (6)Smith, Watkins, Reagor, Ward, Fulgham, Arcega-WhitesideTE (3)Ertz, Goedert, JacksonOL (10)Mailata, Seumalo, Kelce, Brooks, JohnsonDillard, Toth, Herbig, Awosika, DriscollDE (5)Graham, Barnett, Sweat, Kerrigan, M. WilliamsDT (4)Cox, Hargrave, McGill, RidgewayLB (6)Wilson, Singleton, Taylor, Edwards, BradleyJohnsonS (5)Harris, McLeod, Wallace, Epps, RileyCB (4)Slay, Nelson, Maddox, McPhearsonST (3)Lovato, Siposs, Elliott*****I think QB and RB are pretty self-explanatory.WR is where things get interesting. After the first three, things are wide open. Greg Ward is a high-character, versatile player, but he s got limited talent. Fulgham and JJAW both have some size so that makes them useful since the main guys are medium to small. I could see the Eagles looking for help here. They also could go light at WR.At TE, I have Richard Rodgers getting cut. He ll be re-added the next day when Tyree Jackson goes on IR. If the Eagles deal Ertz, Jack Stoll has a chance to make it.I went heavy on the OL. The starters have a trio of older guys so there is a need to keep young talent. I kept Awosika over Sua Opeta. Awosika played OT in college and in some of the preseason games. He s more natural at OG, but the Eagles were cross-training him and that shows some interest in his ability. Opeta is a guard and nothing special. Hopefully the Matt Pryor era is over. Le Raven Clark didn t wow me on Friday. I would keep Toth over him. Landon Dickerson goes to PUP. The Eagles are deep enough to not rush him.DE is pretty easy. Tarron Jackson should be on the practice squad, but he s not worthy of a roster spot right now.The starting DTs are set. T.Y. McGill had a strong summer and should make the roster. Things are open after him. Hassan Ridgeway has flashed in the past, but didn t stand out this year. I kept him for now, but the team should look for an upgrade. I can t see how Raequan Williams makes it. Love his effort, but he just isn t good enough.I went sorta heavy at LB. The Eagles could look to deal either Edwards or Bradley. Both guys played well this summer. I think Patrick Johnson earned a spot. I cut Genard Avery. I would see about putting Davion Taylor on short term IR and bringing Avery back. I don t think Johnson is ready to play a lot. I cut JaCoby Stevens. He just didn t do enough to earn a spot, but he s ideal for the practice squad.Safety is tough. McLeod is coming off a torn ACL. Wallace has a groin injury. Riley left practice the other day and missed the Jets game. I kept Riley over Andrew Adams because Riley looked better this summer and could be a better STer. I m assuming Riley is okay. If his injury could last a few weeks, Adams would get the nod.I don t like going with just four corners, but the group is healthy. I thought about keeping Josiah Scott, but he got hurt in the game the other night and I m not sure what his status is. The Eagles should be looking for backup CB help. Jacquet isn t good enough. Craig James is still dealing with a foot injury.*****I m guessing Dillard and Ertz get traded, but that could take a few days. Teams want to make moves and see what else is out there.Dillard played well against the Jets and showed his raw ability. He hasn t practiced well, but you could see how good his feet are in that game. He has legit talent, making his struggles all the more frustrating. There are a few teams with LT issues that should be interested in taking a chance on him. The Eagles won t get good value, but with Mailata as the starter and Toth as a backup, they have OT flexibilty._ Minshew Comes to Town Posted: August 28th, 2021 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 5 Comments TweetThe QB Factory just got in a new shipment.Trade: Jaguars are sending QB Gardner Minshew II to the Philadelphia Eagles for a conditional 2022 sixth-round pick, per sources. The 6th-round pick could go to a 5th if Minshew plays in 50 percent of the plays in three games this season. Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 28, 2021Trade: #Eagles have acquired QB Gardner Minshew from Jacksonville in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick in 2022. The team also released QB Nick Mullens. pic.twitter.com/MLYrJfymxE Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) August 28, 2021I m glad the Nick Mullens era is over. He really stunk this summer.Adding Minshew makes a lot of sense for the Eagles. He didn t cost much, is young, has some experience and has some talent.I was on the phone with Jimmy Bama discussing the Eagles roster and potential moves this morning. We talked about QB and wondered who the team would go after to be the #3 QB. Clearly Mullens had to go. We figured the team would likely add a young guy who got cut and would put him on the practice squad. Adding Minshew is a better move.I don t think this move says anything about Joe Flacco. He s coming off a strong performace vs the Jets, going 13-16-188 with a pair of TDs. The team likes Flacco. He is the backup.Minshew gives them a young guy to groom as a long term backup. A.J. Feeley had that role years ago and was good for the Eagles.I watched part of the Jaguars game last week and Minshew was up and down. That offense has some issues and it didn t look like a good fit for him. I think the Eagles attack will fit his skill set better. There will be more short, quick throws that focus on getting RAC yards. It will also help that he s got a good OL to play behind.I also think he ll be a good culture fit. Nick Sirianni preaches the importance of competition. Minshew will come here with the attitude that he s going to challenge for the starting role. Sirianni will want guys to push the starters in front of them. Minshew has a mentality that Sirianni will love.I m surprised the #Jaguars only got a conditional late pick for Gardner Minshew.Has starting experience, showed a knack for big plays. Has 38 total career TDs to only 11 INTs.Still two years of cheap contract left..pic.twitter.com/ALu80ZudG0 Dov Kleiman (@NFL_DovKleiman) August 28, 2021Jacksonville was ready to move on and the Eagles benefit from that. Howie Roseman added a young QB with experience and a cheap deal. This is a no brainer deal to me. The Eagles got better and it didn t cost them much._ AFC East Champs Posted: August 27th, 2021 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 1 Comment TweetThe Eagles got the best of the Patriots last week and then got the best of the Jets this week. We ll just assume they would do that to the Bills and Dolphins as well, right? Let s crown the Eagles as AFC East Champs!Training Camp is over. I certainly feel better about the team than I did on August 1. That may sound funny when they ve been outscored 52-0 in the last six quarters of preseason play, but that happened with second and third-string players on the field. We didn t get to see the starters in the joint practices, but all the reports talk of how good they looked, especially the Eagles DL.Because we haven t seen the team much this summer it is hard to get a feel for what their ceiling is. I think the struggles of the backup players means that staying healthy will be absolutely critical for this team to have a shot to be competitive. If this group does stay healthy, they can compete for the NFC East title. That tells us two things. First, the coaches have done a good job with these players. Second, the NFC East is still a weak division.Rather than talking too much about the season, I want to focus on the progress of the team. I think that says a lot about the coaching staff. They ve come in and done a great job of communicating, teaching and motivating. We ll have to wait for the regular season to really know the results, but there has been enough for us to see and hear to see this team is headed in the right direction.Just think about the LB position. Coming into the summer, it was seen as one of the weakest positional groups in the entire NFL. That s changed in a big way. Eric Wilson had a good summer. He s tackled well and has been an effective pass defender. Alex Singleton has looked terrific, flying all over the field and making a ton of tackles. His confidence is through the roof. T.J. Edwards has played well.Davion Taylor did nothing as a rookie. The new staff came in an embraced him. Taylor got reps with the starters and showed outstanding speed and some playmaking ability. He got hurt so we don t know when he ll be back on the field, but the arrow is pointing up for him.Jonathan Gannon believes in the SAM linebacker position as a specialty role. He gave Genard Avery, Joe Ostman and rookie Patrick Johnson a chance there. All three looked good at time. Ostman has since been cut. Avery is dealing with a minor injury, but looked good last week. He was regularly disruptive. I m excited about Johnson s potential. He s athletic and versatile. I think he s going to make the team and has a good future. The reason for optimism with this staff and team is that we re not just choosing one player or one position. Jake Elliott has been on a roll this summer. He struggled in 2020, but seems to be in a real groove. The Eagles 29-year old STs coach has pushed the right buttons. The WR position has a ton of potential. Rookie DeVonta Smith looks like he is going to be a stud. Everyone is excited to see what he can do. Quez Watkins has had a terrific summer and will likely be starting this year. He was fast last year. Now he looks like a polished receiver who also has big time speed. Jalen Reagor has been up and down, but has played better recently. This group is young and explosive. It has been a long time since you could say that about Eagles receivers.Josh Sweat has had a great camp and looks poised to have a big year.Rookie Zech McPhearson has shown a lot of potential. The team has struggled to develop DBs for a while so it would be a great sign to see him become a good role player this year.TEs Tyree Jackson and Jack Stoll have looked good. Jackson really got everyone s attention before his injury.Think about Zach Ertz. He was a mess last year, mentally and physically. He s now dealing with new coaches and a new offense. It would be easy to imagine him struggling with the changes. Instead, he has embraced the situation and looks like his old self (with a slightly different hairdo).New players, old players. Offensive players, defensive players. There seems to be real improvement all over the team. There are still serious roster holes that can t be ignored. Depth is an issue. But there is actually a lot to be excited about and I sure didn t feel that way a month ago. There were a lot of questions about Nick Sirianni and his staff. There were a lot of questions about the Eagles roster. Some of the answers have been better than expected and that is a reason for hope.*****The preseason finale is tonight. It probably won t be much fun to watch with second and third stringers playing the entire game.I ll be interested to see what they do with the OL. I hope to see Jack Driscoll playing RT. He s been up and down at RG, where the team has cross-trained him. I would like Driscoll to get some game time at RT. He looked good there last year.Nate Herbig has struggled at center. It will be interesting to see if he plays there tonight, and if so, how much.I hope Andre Dillard plays LT. Everyone has talked about his struggles. It would be great to see him in a game to see if that brings out the best in him. Le Raven Clark will make his Eagles debut and is in the mix to be the backup LT.LBs JaCoby Stevens and Shaun Bradley have both looked good at times this summer. They could be battling for a roster spot tonight.I hope the QB play is improved so that WRs like John Hightower, JJAW and Andre Patton get a chance to show us something._ Analyzing the Roster Posted: August 24th, 2021 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 4 Comments TweetTraining Camp is winding down so let s take a look at the Eagles roster and discuss some of the players and position groups. There is some high end talent, some ascending players and also more than a few question marks.QBJalen Hurts and Joe Flacco are locks to make the roster. Nick Mullens can t seriously be considered after his performance this summer. We can talk about looking for an upgrade on Flacco, but the organization seems to like him so I think the team will stick with him and Hurts for now.RBMiles Sanders will be the starter. Boston Scott will be the key backup. Rookie Kenny Gainwell will be a role player, as both a runner and pass catcher. The Eagles are going to keep a fourth RB. Most likely that will be Jordan Howard. He s a veteran and has some size, which the other runners don t. From that sense, Howard would be a good move. I do hope the team looks around to see who has been cut and if there is a better option available. There was some thought that Jason Huntley might make it because of his speed, but he hasn t shown enough as a RB to stay. Keeping him as a KOR would be a luxury move at this point. Elijah Holyfield just hasn t done enough to warrant serious consideration.WRWe know DeVonta Smith, Jalen Reagor and Quez Watkins will all make the team. Things are wide open after that.Travis Fulgham had a great month in the 2020 season, but hasn t been the same player since. I hope they keep him around to see if the light can go back on. He showed that he s got the talent. He s just struggled to perform this summer.Greg Ward has continued to do everything possible to make the team, but he has no upside and he s purely a slot receiver. You want to keep him because he s the kind of person you want to keep around to build good culture. He also can be an emergency QB and STer. That might be enough for him to stay.J.J. Arcega-Whiteside has had a solid camp, but hasn t done anything in the preseason games. I m sure the Eagles want to keep him to see if he can finally do something, even if only as a role player.John Hightower needs time on the practice squad. He has legit NFL speed, but needs work on his overall game. The Eagles need to be scanning the waiver wire to see if there is a young player they want to add to this mix. That guy could make Fulgham, Ward or JJAW expendable.TEDallas Goedert and Richard Rodgers will make the team. Rodgers might get cut for a day or two if the organization is shuffling the roster to protect a player like Tyree Jackson. The Eagles don t want to put him on IR now and lose him for the season. Jackson would need to make the roster and then go on short-term IR. That could lead to Rodgers being cut for a day or two.I still think Zach Ertz gets dealt, but I feel more open to him returning. Ertz has had a good summer and looks like he put the misery of 2020 behind him. Will a contender finally make a decent offer?OLThe starters are set with Mailata-Seumalo-Kelce-Brooks-Johnson. After that, things get interesting.Jack Driscoll is a lock because he can take over at RT if needed. He s worked at OG this summer and could play there, but OT seems more natural right now.Nate Herbig looked good at OG last year. He s played mostly C this summer and has struggled a bit. He probably makes it because of his versatility, price and youth. No one knows what is up with Andre Dillard. He is getting closer to getting back on the field. The Eagles could keep him as a backup LT or trade him. This is a bit of a mystery.Sua Opeta and Brett Toth both have a legit chance to make the team. I like Toth better, especially since he has potential as a LT. Opeta is purely an OG.Landon Dickerson seems headed for the PUP list. That would keep him out until about midseason.Le Raven Clark is a mystery man. He just returned to practice. He would make sense if the team trades Dillard.I cannot see a realistic way that Matt Pryor makes this roster. My sanity won t allow it.DEThe top group of Graham, Barnett, Sweat and Kerrigan are all set. Rookie Milton Williams will play DE and DT. Those are your five guys.Tarron Jackson is worth the practice squad, but I can t see him making the roster.DTCox and Hargrave are a terrific 1-2 punch. T.Y. McGill has played well this summer and should have secured a spot. Hassan Ridgeway has been okay. He hasn t stood out in any way. I m guessing he makes it, but the Eagles will keep their eyes open to see if anyone better gets cut.I cannot see Raequan Williams having a legit shot at the roster. Love the effort, but he s not stout enough to be good vs the run and he s too limited to be a good rusher. Williams is better than rookie Marlon Tuipulotu, but that is setting the bar amazingly low (like calling someone the sexiest Lawlor).DT is a spot where the Eagles need to keep their eyes wide open. The starters are good, but depth could be an issue.LBHow shocking is it to look at LB and not hate what you see? These are crazy days.We know Wilson, Singleton, Edwards and Taylor will all make it. I think the team should keep a pair of SAMs in Avery and Patrick Johnson.I think Shaun Bradley and JaCoby Stevens could make it. That would give the Eagles eight LBs. How nuts is that? Probably not likely.I could see Stevens getting cut and put on the practice squad. He s been hurt much of the summer and lasted until the 6th round in April s draft so it wasn t like teams were hot on his trail. Please send Rashad Smith to Mars. Joe Ostman might be worth keeping on the practice squad. Other players have talked about how good he can be in practice. There is value in that.SIt feels like Rodney McLeod will stay off PUP and will make the roster. Anthony Harris will certainly make it. K Von Wallace will make the roster. We just have to hope he stays healthy. That could leave the Eagles will two more safety spots. I would go with Marcus Epps and Elijah Riley at this point. Epps has more experience and probably more upside, but Riley could develop into a good role player (especially on STs).Andrew Adams has been disappointing.Blake Countess is like the caretaker on The Shining. He will always be here. Or maybe it just feels that way.CBThere are four players worth keeping Slay, Nelson, Maddox and McPhearson.Josiah Scott has had his moments, but he s purely a slot guy and that has to hurt his value. He could make it, but that wouldn t be ideal.I don t think we ve seen enough of Craig James, Michael Jacquet or Kevon Seymour to be comfortable with any of them. This is another spot where I would be closely watching the waiver wire.STArryn Siposs will be the punter, Rick Lovato will be your snapper and Jake Elliott will be the kicker. No one is good enough to earn a role purely as a returner._ Donate to Iggles Blitz Eagles Blog FeedOpposite DirectionsOver the past five weeks, the Eagles are 2-2-1.
